Argonia Parents As Teachers

Now Accepting New Families

Parents As Teachers (PAT) is a fun, early learning program sponsored by the Argonia School District for parents and children prenatal to three years of age.  This is a free service for the parents of Argonia USD 359.  The mission of PAT is to provide the information, support, and encouragement parents need to help their children develop optimally during the crucial years of life because parents are a child's first and most influential teacher.

Research shows that PAT children outscored their peers on measures of school readiness and later school achievement.  PAT children were more advanced than other three-year-olds in language and social development, problem solving, and other intellectual skills.  PAT children performed better than non-PAT children in elementary school.  Go to www.kpata.org for more PAT research.

The PAT program consists of personal home visits with a certified parent educator who is trained in child development.  Each home visit includes information and activities that promote early learning.  Regular development screenings are conducted to make sure children don't have any undetected learning problems.  There is a resource network that can help parents find resources needed in their community, if needed, beyond what Parents As Teachers can provide.  There are also group connections through parent-child library and/or playgroups promoting early childhood literacy including rhymes, finger plays, songs, story time, make-and-take activities, and snacks.

Contact Jenny Johnston, Parent Educator, at jjohnston@argonia359.org or 620-892-2033 to take advantage of all this program has to offer.
