Sculpture Walk and Art Museum Field Trip

The fourth grade had a wonderful time on an art field trip sponsored by The Art Center. The first stop was a sculpture walk that began at the Keeper of the Plains.  Prior to attending, the class took some time to learn about Black Bear Bosin, the artist who created the Keeper of the Plains, and how he created the sculpture. He is one of the several famous Kansans we will learn about this year in fourth grade. When we arrived, we got lucky because the city workers were working on the fire features so we got to see some of the fire caldrons lit up. After viewing the Keeper of the Plains, we then walked to two other sculptures, the Troll of Wichita and the Vietnam Memorial.  We took some time to compare and contrast the three different sculptures. Next, we headed to the Wichita Art Museum (WAM) where we ate lunch prior to our tour. We started our tour by viewing an amazing glass chandelier hanging from the ceiling of the large gathering area.  Next, we headed to the galleries and viewed several very interesting collections.  They were all unique and quite interesting.  We finished the tour by creating some art of our own. We had a very fun and energetic docent.  On our way home, we stopped for ice cream at the Daily Scoop in Conway Springs and made it back to school just in time for the school bake sale! Thank you to The Art Center for sponsoring our field trip, and thank you Ms. Juliana Whisman for planning a great day for us!  The fourth graders are Emma Hornbeck, Lane Lackey, Sophie Scott, Haedyn Taton, and Trace Thompson.
